TEHRAN, Feb 28 — The United States and Israel launched coordinated military strikes on targets inside Iran early Saturday, dramatically escalating tensions in the Middle East and triggering fears of a wider regional conflict.
Explosions were reported across parts of Tehran, with residents describing loud blasts during the early hours. Iranian state media confirmed that military facilities were among the sites hit, though casualty figures were not immediately released.
Officials in the United States and Israel said the operation targeted strategic military infrastructure. They stressed that civilian sites were not the intended focus.
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei condemned the strikes and vowed retaliation, according to state television. The warning raised concerns that the confrontation could expand beyond current targets.
The developments prompted a swift international reaction. The United Nations is expected to convene an emergency Security Council meeting. Several neighbouring countries temporarily restricted airspace, while energy markets reacted to fears of supply disruptions.
Analysts say the strikes represent one of the most serious direct confrontations involving Iran, the U.S., and Israel in recent years.
The situation remains fluid as diplomatic efforts intensify to prevent further escalation.
